The conference hall of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Abeokuta on Thursday 11th February, 2016 played host to government officials, football administrators and school representatives as Guaranty Trust Bank officially announced the commencement of the 4th edition of its flagship youth soccer competition, the Ogun State Principals Cup.
The competition which has become an integral part of the academic calendar of schools, provides a veritable platform for students to explore their potentials and acquire life changing skills. The ceremony formally sets the tone for the series of activities that the competition will feature this year.
On ground to perform the unveiling were the Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Moruf Afolabi Afuwape, the Ogun State Commissioner of Education, Hon. Modupe Mujota andother senior officials from the Ogun State Football Association, Ogun State Ministries of Education, Sports and Youth development, as well as representatives of secondary schools that emerged winners in last year’s tournament.
This year, the tournament is expected to feature over 360 teams in the male and female categories, a figure higher than the 344 teams that took part in the competition last season. The competition provides a platform for identifying, nurturing and grooming young and talented players amongst Secondary School students in Nigeria and is aimed at actively engaging the youths through sports whilst promoting the values of excellence, fair play and camaraderie.
Guaranty Trust Bank, a youth oriented brand maintains the lead in providing support for education and sports to enable young boys and girls explore their talents and reach for their dreams. It is one of the few Nigerian financial institutions that have maintained a defined Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, most especially in sports education.
Alongside the Ogun State Principals Cup, GTBank also sponsors the Lagos State Principals Cup, and the Masters Cup tournament in Lagos and Ogun state.
Season 4 of the Ogun State Principals Cup Kicks Off
One of the biggest school football championships in Nigeria kicked off on Thursday 11th February, 2016 at the Nigerian Union of Teachers Cooperative Hall, Abeokuta Ogun State, following the official announcement by Guaranty Trust Bank of the commencement of the 4th edition of its school football competition, the Ogun State Principals Cup.
Attending the competition were top government officials such as the Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Moruf Afolabi Afuwape, Hon. Modupe Mujota, the Ogun State Commissioner of Education and the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Ministry of Youth & Sports, Mr. Hakeem Olalekan Adelekan. Also gathered at the event were football administrators, representatives of the participating schools and members of the press.
The Ogun State Principals Cup has grown rapidly to become a major fixture in the academic calendar of schools in the state and the premier event bringing young people together to have fun while exploring their potentials and building a healthier lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives. “Grassroots football is a powerful facilitator in helping kids improve their life skills, said Mr Segun Agbaje, the Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank plc. “Through the Principals Cup, we are paving the way for youths to cultivate their sporting talents while imbibing the spirit of fair play, hard work, and discipline, which are some of the core values of GTBank.”

Activities for the GTBank-Ogun State Principals Cup Season 4 got underway with a press conference on Thursday 11th February 2016, at the conference hall of the Nigerian Union of Teachers Cooperative Hall, Abeokuta Ogun State.
The GTBank-Ogun State Principals Cup soccer competition started in 2012 as an extension of the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative on education and youth development. For 4 consecutive seasons, the competition continues to provide a unique platform for young boys and girls in secondary schools to develop themselves in academics and sports.
To perform the official unveiling of the GTBank-Ogun State Principals Cup Season 4 the competition were the Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Moruf Afolabi Afuwape, with the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Hakeem Olalekan Adelekan; the Commissioner of Education, Hon. Modupe Mujota. Also present at the event were football administrators, representatives of the participating schools and members of the press.
The GTBank-Ogun State Principals Cup competition has grown rapidly to become a key inclusion in the academic calendar of secondary schools in the state, fostering friendship amongst students and enabling them to build a healthy lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives.
This season’s tournament is expected to feature about 350 teams in the male and female categories, a figure slightly higher than the 344 teams that competed last year. Aside the cash prizes for winning teams, scholarship opportunities will be provided for outstanding players with good academic records.
