Ikotun Senior High Schools emerges 2015 GTBank Principal Cup Champions

Lagos – Ikotun Senior High School, Ikotun, Lagos on Wednesday defeated Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, 3-1 to win the 2015 Guaranty Trust Bank-Lagos State Principals Cup in the girls category.

The prestigious grassroots football tournament, in its sixth season, began in January with 18 schools competing for honours in the girl’s category.

Anuoluwapo Salisu and Amwuchi Anusillem goals in the first half of the match got the school from Ikotun a good start.

Ikotun High School dominated game with good combination from the strikers and the mid fielders put pressure on the Oriwu collage.

However, Peace Ikedubu solo effort goal for the Ikorodu team gave the team necessary hope as the first half ended 2-1 in favour of Ikotun.

Ikotun Senior High came stronger in the second half, with star player and captain, Salisu, showing good leadership coordinating well between the attackers and the midfielders.

Her ball skills and ball passing made the Ikorudu team looked ordinary.

Salisu’s efforts were rewarded in the dying minutes of the match when she connected with a cross from her wing player to smash the ball pass Ikorodu goalkeeper.

She scored a brace and the third goal of the match.

Ikotun team captain was named the most valuable player of the match.

Salisu told NAN after the match that team efforts and determination contributed to their victory.

“We came second last year and were determined to do better this year. We are happy for our achievement because we worked very hard as a team,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, Oriwu college captain, Ashabi Oloko said that the team lost to a better side.

“We did our best but it did not work out the way we planned, we lost to a better side. We hope to do better next time,’’ she said. (NAN)
