Arsenal chiefs believe Southampton captain Jose Fonte is joining Manchester United.
The London Evening Standard says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is unlikely to firm up his interest because Fonte has his heart set on a switch to Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho is keen to bring the 32-year-old to United but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has told him that some deadwood needs to be offloaded first.
Mourinho wants Fonte to mentor 22-year-old Eric Bailly while Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo could depart before next week’s deadline.
Fonte, who helped Portugal to Euro 2016 glory this summer, is under contract until 2018 and has been offered an extension but is yet to agree terms.
And he has admitted he is flattered by the link to United.
